Hampatong comes from the word Patong which means statue. Hampatong are generally tall statues made of ironwood or ironwood.
The concept of belief in ancestral spirits has existed since prehistoric times and up to now it still applies to the Dayak community as is the case with most of the ethnic groups that still live in the interior. Hampatong relating to death and ancestors, is considered as a representation of individuals who have died or commonly known as ancestral figures.
These statues, believed to be guards to protect local people from diseases and disorders of evil spirits.
