The Truntum motif created by Kanjeng Ratu Kencana (Empress Sunan Paku Buwana III) means love that grows back. He created this motif as a symbol of sincere love that is unconditional, eternal, and growing increasingly fertile (tumaruntum). Because of its meaning, the truntum patterned cloth is usually worn by parents of the bride and groom on the wedding day. The hope is that this love of tumaruntum will descend on the bride and groom. Sometimes it also means that parents are obliged to “guide” the bride and groom to enter a new life.
